Intel's 12th Generation CPU: Will it beat Apple's macOS?

Intel's 12th Generation CPU: Will it beat Apple's macOS?

Intel has announced the first hybrid chipset for desktops. Intel is now delivering the 12th generation CPU based on the Alder Lake design. Intel’s 12th Gen processor is for creative work and better gaming. You can also pre-order them right now.

The initial rollout of Intel’s 12th Generation CPU has three models:

  1. Intel Core i9-12900K
  2. Core i7-12700K
  3. Core i5-12600K

The KF version does not include any integrated graphics.

Design

Alder Lake uses a hybrid architecture design to bring together the different processing cores. The first core is the Performant core (P-core), and the other is the Efficient core (E-core). The E core is there to handle background tasks.

These cores also have a power management controller, and Alder Lake design also has the support for:

  • DDR4,
  • DDR5,
  • PCIe Gen 4, and
  • PCIe Gen 5 storage support.

In short, Intel’s 12th Gen chipset supports both generations of the DDR systems.

Specifications

The top chipset has 16 cores & 24 threads. The chipset also has two cores; E-cores and P-cores. However, the base frequency is not similar in both the E cores and P cores. The i7 model also comes with 12 cores and 20 threads.

All these chips have a 125 W power limit, but they can boost higher than it. Intel’s 12th Gen chipsets can deliver multi-threaded performance while consuming less power.

Performance

There are no third-party benchmarks results available right now because it will start rolling out in November 2021. However, you will also get 30% improvements in gaming over an AMD chipset.

According to Intel, you will also get more significant improvements while multitasking. The top model of Intel’s 12th Gen chipset can provide up to 84% improvements in FPS compared to the previous generation.

Overclocking

The P-cores and E-cores on the Alder Lake CPUs run at different frequencies. As a result, it is always hard to lock the Alder Lake CPU. However, Intel offers an updated Extreme Overclocking Utility tool. It also provides you the ability to tweak the P-cores and E-cores independently.

Other Improvements

Intel’s 12th Gen chipsets also have many other significant improvements, such as:

  • Z690 motherboards and new sockets.
  • Thread Director
  • Windows 11 support.
  • Alder Lake-P mobile processors

Price

Intel’s 12th Gen chipset will start arriving in November 2021. The price of the K and KF series also depends on the Core and CPU.

  • Intel Core i5-12600KF = $264
  • Core i5-12600K = $289
  • Intel Core i7-12700KF = $384
  • Core i7-12700K = $409
  • Intel Core i9-12900KF = $564
  • Core i9-12900K = $589

Intel did not raise the price in the US. The i7 and i9 CPUs price got a little hype, but the i5 CPUs price is similar to the previous generation.

Conclusion

The K series 12th generation Intel CPUs are expensive compared to the KF series because they have integrated graphics. Gaming is the main focus in the Alder Lake chipsets. Intel has tweaked the specifications to match Intel’s 12th Gen processor architecture.
